Darrell Young Obituary (1947 - 2024)

Darrell Ray Young, age 77, passed away on August 22, 2024. Darrell was born on March 16, 1947, in Baker City, Oregon to Harry Young and Elizabeth Hill Young and was an only child. He graduated from Baker High School in 1965 and joined the Army shortly after. He proudly served in Korea. From there, he was stationed at Tooele Army Depot and then served in Vietnam. He was exposed to agent orange during his time in Vietnam, which caused many medical problems later in his life. He served his last station in the full time Army at Fort Riley, Kansas. While stationed at Tooele Army Depot, he met and married Laura Johnson Young in Dec of 1967. They had 2 children, Brenda and Brad. They later divorced. He met Connie Proctor, and they married in June of 1985. He became step-dad to Jon, Katie, and Wolf. He worked for Anaconda Smelter for about a year after leaving the service in 1970 and then went to work for Tooele Army Depot as a Boiler Fireman. In the summer he was “Young”, in the winter, when they wanted heat in the buildings, he was “Mr. Young”. He joined the Army National Guard in 1984 and served in the 118th Engineer Company (AFBR) for 7 years. He retired from Tooele Army Depot in 1993. He decided to get his CDL in 1995 and went to work for Condisco for 10 years and then retired for good. Darrell loved trains! He always had a model railroad layout going. He “operated” trains, talked about trains, read books and magazines about trains, watched videos and documentaries about trains, and he spent time in the train yards with his kids. He also enjoyed woodworking and yardwork. If you were a neighbor to Darrell and Connie, you know how they cared for their yard. Darrell was a hard worker and taught his kids to have a good work ethic. He believed in a job well done, doing the job right the first time, taking care of the things you had, and there was a place for everything and everything had a place. He is survived by his loving spouse of 39 years, Connie Young, daughter Brenda (Ben) Oliphant, son Brad (Misty) Young, step-kids Jon (Kathy) Proctor, Katie Manzione (Winn Pauley), Wolf Proctor, and numerous grandkids and great-grandkids. We would like to give a big Thank You to the staff and caregivers at Cottage Glen, Harmony Home Health Care, including Rachel, Heather, Janice, Maddy & Hudson, with a special thanks to Barbara McFarland. As per Darrell’s wishes, there will be no services.
