Alice Candelaria
1923-2011
Alice Manuelita Candelaria, our dear mother, grandmother, great -grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on the morning of Sunday, October 2nd. Alice was born in Taos, New Mexico to the late Alfonso and Eulogia Mares on January 5th, 1923. She enjoyed a simple childhood on her family’s farm, gathering eggs, picking apples, making dolls out of sticks, and always, always laughing. She came to Tooele, UT with her family in 1944 and married her true love, Manuel T. Candelaria on October 8th, 1949. One of her greatest joys in life was taking care of children, whether it was her own, or the many that she looked after out of the kindness of her heart. All of us that she cared for would agree that she, without even knowing it, taught us all so much; to think positive, that love and happiness have nothing to do with possessions, that a hug and a smile from someone who loves you can make all your problems seem manageable and so, so much more. She also enjoyed the 12 years she spent as a volunteer for Mrs. Bird’s 2nd grade class at Central Elementary. She loved her Spanish music, and never turned down an offer to dance. We are happy to know she is dancing again. Alice will remain in the hearts of so many whose lives she touched. Alice is survived by five children, Robert Leroy Candelaria (Shirley) , Charles Candelaria (Christina), Anthony Candelaria (Janet), Elaine Enright (Michael), Carla McKay (Thomas), and Paul Candelaria; 22 grandchildren, 19 great-granchildren; three sisters, Oclides Smith, Ruby Bullock (Don), Lucy Vuocolo, and brother Bill Mares (Audrey). She is preceded in death by her parents, Alfonso and Eulogia Mares, husband, Manuel Candelaria, daughters, Cecilia and Carmen Jean, sister Cora and brothers, Levi and Ernest Santistevan. We would like to thank the staff at Cottage Glen, we are truly grateful for all the care they provided her and to the residents that became her friends. A visitation will be held at St. Marguerite’s Catholic Church on Friday, October 7th at 11 a.m., followed by a Mass at noon. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. at Tooele City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the family in care of Elaine Enright.
