Lillian Ruth Mueller Walters

Our sweet mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lillian Walters, passed away May 20, 2011 surrounded by her loving family at Mountain West Medical Center, Tooele, Utah, at the age of 91.  She was born January 2, 1920 in Tooele, Utah to William Mueller and Lillian Marcella Gillespie Mueller being the first girl after two older brothers, Rex and Oran G.  Kathryn, Ross and Mary Lou followed completing the family.

She was very athletic in high school enjoying and excelling in swimming, diving, dancing and cheerleading. She survived a terrible accident in her teens and was told by doctors she would probably never have any children.  She married Ray Frank Walters in 1939 and in 1953 their marriage was sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. That same joyous day her sisters Kathryn and Mary Lou were also sealed to their families. Ray preceded her in death January 7, 1987.

Lillian was loved and admired by all who knew her.  She was giving and kind and always thought of the needs of others before herself.  She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities.  She spent many, many years teaching in Jr. Sunday School.  She always loved being around little children and they loved her, too.  All Lillian’s grandchildren loved her so much because they could feel the love she had for them.

Lillian loved spending time in the outdoors whether it was camping and fishing with her family and extended family or just simply going for a ride up the canyon with her sweetheart.  She enjoyed needlework and made many beautiful items presenting them as gifts to her family and friends. She was a great cook and enjoyed making candies at Christmas time for gifts.   Many friends especially looked forward to her peanut brittle and hand-dipped chocolates during the holiday season.

In 2003, Lillian and Lee Rockwell were married and enjoyed each other’s companionship until Lee passed away in 2006.  She moved to Cottage Glen where she spent her last few years.

Lillian is survived by her children Ron (Marjie) Walters, Soda Springs, Idaho; Dona Marie (Smokey) McElroy, Los Lunas, New Mexico; DeAnn Higgs, Sunset, Utah; Sue (Brad) Patch, Tooele, Utah. She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Lourene Walters of Soda Springs, Idaho and Jim Dinwoodey, a son-in-law of Tooele, Utah. She was the proud grandmother of 21 and the great grandmother of 66.  We will all miss her dearly.

The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Cottage Glen for the love and gentle care of our mother. Special thanks to Cottage Glen resident Tony Sandoval for his concern and compassionate service to her.  Our mother was very thankful to everyone who provided care or any small service for her. Thanks, also, to Dr. Forbes and the staff of Mountain West Medical Center for their kind and gracious attention shown to our mother as well as the family members.

Thank you, Mother, for the love you’ve given to so many. Your inspiring example has helped us all, as well as countless others yet to come. We love and appreciate you—more than words can say. You’ll be in our hearts always, Mom, until we’re with you again.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 11:00 am at the Tooele 4th/14th LDS Ward Chapel, 192 West Second South, Tooele, Utah.  There will be a viewing from 6:00 to 8:00 pm the prior evening on Wednesday, May 25 at Tate Mortuary and from 9:30 to 10:30 on Thursday before the funeral at the church.
