Isabel M. Valerio (1925-2011)

Isabel Mares Valerio passed away peacefully on Easter morning, April 24, 2011, surrounded by family. Isabel was born in Black Lake, New Mexico on August 13, 1925. She was the second child of Clodoveo Mares and Ciria Cintas Mares.

As a child, she loved to be in the open country of Taos playing, helping her family with the harvest and herding sheep with her father. For five years, Isabel wrote countless letters to her future husband, Esmeal Margarito Valerio, as he fought overseas in World War II. They were married on May 15, 1946 and later moved to Grantsville, Utah where they made their home.

Isabel held jobs at Tooele Valley Meats, Skyline Restaurant and Tooele Valley Nursing Home. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening. She was also an active member of St. Marguerite’s Catholic Church. However, her greatest joy in life was being a wife, a mother and a grandmother, and her family loved spending time with her.

Isabel is survived by her children, Toby Valerio (Estrella), Becky Rupp (Paul), Ciria Howsden (Don), Stella Blight (John), Albert Valerio, Beverly Stutzman (John), Frank Valerio, and her sister Grace. She also has 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Isabel was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers (Paul Mares and Robert), sisters (Lucille and Marcella), and one daughter (Loren Valerio).

Services will be held on Saturday, April 30, at St. Marguerite’s Catholic Church located at 15 South 7th Street, Tooele, Utah. Viewing will begin at 11 a.m. Services begin at noon. Interment will be at Grantsville City Cemetery.
