Florence Briggs Anderson

Less than a month before her 96th birthday, Florence Briggs Anderson completed her journey on earth. She passed away quietly at the home of her daughter, Lois on March 24,2011 just a little more than a year after her beloved Max, her husband of nearly 75 years. She was anxious to be with him again. Florence was born April 14, 1915 in Malad, Idaho to George E and Cora Barlow Briggs. She grew up in Layton and graduated from Davis High School and attended Utah Agricultural College in Logan. It was there she met Max, and they were married October 7, 1935. They made their home in Tooe1e where Max introduced his new bride as “Briggs”, and the name stuck. She and Max ran Anderson’s Market on Main Street. They later built and ran the Riverside Motel in Salt Lake City. Briggs was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After retirement, Briggs and Max moved to the St George area where they lived between Tooele and St George. She was president of the Ladies Auxiliary when Max was Fire Chief in Tooele. She was also President of the Ladies Golf Association in Tooele, and won many trophies both in Tooele and St George. They loved the trailer life and spent many years traveling together. Max liked to play Bridge, but Briggs would play any kind of cards. She was featured recently in the Provo Herald for having played cards for 75 years and still playing them at the Senior Center in American Fork. Max and Briggs had three children, daughter Lois Hawkins (Ted), son Bill Anderson (Kathy), and son, Robert Anderson (Cheryle). She is survived by 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Barlow Briggs. She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Max, her parents, son Robert, 2 brothers, a sister, and a great-granddaughter, Taylor Anderson. The family is so grateful to Community Nursing Services Home Health and to Envision Home Health and Hospice for their devoted, caring help during the past few months. Funeral Services were held March 30, 2011.
