Eugene Lohnes

Eugene Lohnes beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away February 23, 2011 at home surrounded by his family at the age of 94. Born on January 2, 1917 to Florence Morin Lohnes and Aaron O. Lohnes on Spirit lake Reservation in Warwick, ND was the oldest of eleven children. He loved his Native American Heritage and would often reminise about his childhoold on the Lohnes Township in Warwick, ND where he spent much of his childhood growing up with his grandparents on their large farm. His fondest memories were those of his full blooded Sioux grandmother, Mary Waanatan lohnes who was very traditional, dressing in her native custom. He maried Dorothy May Morgan on August 11, 1944 in Elko, NV and a short time later their marriage was blessed in the St. Marguerite’s Catholic Church where he has been a dedicated member since moving to Tooele. He was an excellent provider, he worked at the Tooele Army Depot and retired after 35 years but he continued working and was employed at the Pig Ranch as well as Anaconda. Eugene was an avid sports fan; there was not a question his grandchildren would ask relating to sports that he could not answer. Above all his most cherished moments were those spent with his family especially during the holidays, he could have not been prouder of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren he loved them very much. Grandpa you will be deeply missed you left behind some wonderful memories that your grandchildren and great grandchildren will cherish throughout their lives, we love you. Survived by daughters, Terri Cook (John) of Grantsville, Susan Lohnes of Tooele; brothers, Paul Lohnes of Sacramento CA, David Lohnes (Jeannie) of St. Michaels, ND; sister, Elizabeth Lacrioux of Sisston, SD; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews from North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. Preceded in death by Dorothy Lohnes; son Craig Lohnes; daughter-in- law Janiel Lohnes; brothers, Roger Lohnes (Lucille), Edward Lohnes (Toots), Daniel Lohnes; sisters, Lily Hunt (Herbert), Margaret Ironheart (Silas), Teresa Zertuchie (John), Marian Griffin. We would like to thank Mountain West Hospice for their services and give special recognition and thank you to Kathleen and Chris for their support and dedication in the care they provided to grandpa and family in the last few days. A visitation and eulogy will be held Tuesday, March 1 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the St. Marguerite’s Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Marguerite’s Catholic Church, 15 S. 7th Street, Tooele. Internment will be at the Tooele City Cemetery.
