Posted By on November 29, 2010

Richard Lenard Smith, a loving father, husband, brother, and friend, died November 29, 2010 in his home after a long battle with cancer. He was 67.  Smith was a life-long resident of Tooele Valley, born to George Willis (Farmer) Smith and Margaret Hale on May 29, 1943. He was the captain of the Tooele High School football team, and lettered all four years in track. He had a love for sports, the outdoors, and family. In 1963 he married his high school sweetheart, Annette Thomas Allen. The two later divorced but remained close friends.    Smith dedicated the majority of his career to working on locomotives for the government and private companies. He married Cheryl Battison Smith in 1983. As he grew older, Smith found joy in watching his grandchildren play little league sports, visiting friends every morning and spending time with his dogs. He was known for his kind heart and undying sense of humor.   He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; children, Richie Smith (Dorothy Marshall), Greg (Cynthia) Smith, Tracy (John) Harris, Jordan Smith and Hollie Smith; siblings, Roland (Elberta) Smith, and Beverly (Chuck) Renneau; and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Billy; sister, Margie; and daughter, Trudy Smith.   At his request, Smith will be cremated. Visitors can meet with the family at Tate Mortuary from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. There will be a graveside service Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Tooele City Cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Utah Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
