Jordan Matthew Byrd, 19, was killed in action Wednesday October 13, 2010, while in the act of aiding a wounded soldier during a combat mission in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. Jordan was born November 16, 1990 to Roberta Byrd (Pitt) and Justin Brost in Cody, Wyoming. Jordan attended school in Tooele County, graduating high school from Dugway High where he was Senior Class President, a member of the National Honor Society, along with playing on the school baseball team and wrestling team. Jordan graduated 2 months early and was attending classes at the University of Utah when he chose to join the U.S. Army to advance his future in the medical field. Jordan joined the army to become a Medic and was assigned to HHC1-506 inf 101st Airborne Division in which he took great pride to be with a combat unit with a history of valor going back to the invasion of Nazi occupied France during World War II. Jordan married Savanna Small on December 21, 2009 in Tooele, Utah while home on leave before his formal training as a medic at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas. He would be joined by his wife of 3 months later when he was assigned permanently to Fort Campbell, Kentucky with the 101st Airborne Division. Jordan enjoyed life to the fullest and approached each day with a large smile and a thumbs up attitude, which was contagious. He was one to bring his best to any situation and lighten up the darkest of moments with his smile and laugh. Jordan enjoyed fishing, hunting, fast cars and kids. Jordan would welcome all challenges that life would put before him and was always there when others were in need. Jordan’s proudest moments were his marriage to Savanna along with the birth of his son Ayden. Jordan was also proud of his service to his country and fellow soldiers. Jordan passed away on the battlefield selflessly aiding those around him. Jordan’s fellow soldiers hailed him a hero and honored him in their own way on October 18, 2010 at Forward Operation Base Shakana in Afghanistan. Jordan is survived by his wife Savanna, son Ayden, mother and father, Roberta and Scott Pitt, Father Justin Brost, (Jennifer) sisters Abby Byrd, Maddie (Mitch) Klupenher, Sidney, Emmily Brost, brothers Nicholas Torrence Brown, Tyler Corbett, Trevor Brost, grandparents Richard and Dorothy Pitt, Billy and Nancy Byrd, Gearald and Juanita Brost. Funeral services will be held on Friday October 22, 2010 at 12:00 Noon at the Tooele South Stake Center, 1025 Southwest Dr. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 6:00-8:00PM at Tate Mortuary, 110 So Main St. Tooele, Utah and 10:30-11:30 prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the Grantsville City Cemetery.

I have just learned of the passing of your husband and son, Jordan, who I understand has previously taken classes from Utah State University. We are so sorry for your loss, but so proud to be able to claim him in some small measure as one of our own. Had the drumbeat of his life not have ended so soon, I’m sure he would have gone on to have achieved great things. As a mother who has lost two children, I understand the pain that you must be feeling. I hope you will find the peace and comfort you need in this stressing time.
Sincerely,

I don’t know Jordan, or his family, however the Spirit in me right now has prompted me to say something. I do wish to say that I very much appreciate and in debt to Jordan at the price he paid. I am sure that you, the family, are very proud of him, because I am. I do hope that you get all the comfort you need at this time, and to his wife and child. I wish I could be there to protect his funeral, and as well, to give you some kind of peace and comfort at this time as you deserve.
I do pray that God will help you at this time of great need for the loss of Jordan, and that also, give comfort that you will see him again. Please remember, that some of us beyond your family are very much indebted to Jordon.
