Gerald (Jerry) Ray Porter
July 23, 1928 – October 18,2010
Gerald (Jerry) Porter of Pine Canyon passed away unexpected and peacefully at his home on 18 October 2010 at the age of 82. He was very blessed in this life as he did not suffer any long lingering illnesses. Although we are saddened by our loss we know this is how he would have wanted to go and are comforted knowing he is now surrounded by family and many good friends that have gone before him. Jerry was born on 23 July l928 in Flint, Michigan. He honorably served in the U.S. Air Force and returned to marry his childhood sweetheart, Twila Thompson in June of 1949, in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last summer. Jerry is survived by his wife Twila and their 5 children; Linda (Roger) Lougy, Steve (Patsy), Cathy (Jerry) Overstreet, Gary (Lisa), and Rich (Phyllis), 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law Doris Chatman. Jerry and Twila, along with 3 little children moved to Utah in 1952 where he made his career at Dugway Proving Grounds in the meteorology/electronics field. During his years of service he received many accreditations for his work. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and Eagle Lodges. Jerry retired in June of 1978 at which time he and Twila began following the sun each winter to Arizona, which has allowed them to enjoy warm weather year round. The good times they’ve had and memories they’ve shared have prompted his retired children to follow in their footsteps and head south each winter. His passion was working with his hands and was always there with a hammer in his hand ready to help. He was a master craftsman and has left his family with many treasures of his craftsmanship. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob, sister Lois Burke, grandson Jamie Porter, granddaughters Camille Daly Stacey and Wendy Lougy Henrikson. There will be a viewing at the Tate Mortuary on Friday, October 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. followed by a memorial service in the Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be at the Tooele Cemetery.
