Roy Douglas Pogue

A great man has passed from the world, though the world does not know it. Roy Douglas Pogue was not a famous man, but to his large family and many friends – he was a hero. Roy was born to William Henry (Curt) Pogue and Nancy Drucilla Williams. in Johns Mills, Missouri. From early on, Roy was taught the value of hard work and loyalty to his family as they struggled to survive during the depression. Looking for work, he traveled to many states. He met his sweetheart, Elma Durfee, in Green River, Utah and they married in 1942 and settled in California together. They had 5 children; Lucille Beecher, Robert Ervin Pogue (deceased), Norma June White, Billie Gillette and Joann (Robert) Wetzel. They settled in Tooele, Utah, to raise their family. Elma passed away in 1969. He later married Alice Thompson Gillette and became father to Sandy Lasater, Ava Larsen, Ephraim, Grant, Ben and Michael Gillette, Winona Vigil and Eugena (deceased). Alice and Roy were later divorced. He has many grandchildren and great grandchildren in his posterity. During his life, he worked on farms, logging, picking fruit and spent nearly 30 years working for the Union Pacific Railroad. Together, he and Elma built their own home and established the Homestead Trailer Park in the early 1960′s in Tooele. During his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Quartzite, Arizona and summers in Missouri and California. He enjoyed family gatherings and barbeques. He would go out of his way to visit people he had known for a long time or just recently met. He was a man known for his honesty, generous nature, compassion, loyalty, good sense and endearing smile. He had a sense of humor and was quite the story teller. All who would listen, enjoyed hearing him relate his memories of his life or others. He has 6 brothers and 3 sisters and is survived by his brother Ross (Nellie) Pogue of Bakersfield, California and his sister Margie Rodgers of Markham, Illinois and one brother-in-law Ed Jemas of San Jose, California. There will be a viewing Thursday, August 6th from 6-8 pm at Tate Mortuary and from 10:00-10:45 prior to the funeral. The funeral will be held at Tate Mortuary at 11:00 am on Friday, August 7, 2009.

What a wonderful man and great example the world received when this dear man was born. Everyone who had the honor and privledge of knowing Roy was truly blessed – thank God I am one of those fortunate ones thanks to my wonderful mom and dad (Mary and Juan Medina). My dad and Roy remained friends as long as I can remember. I can only imagine what a reunion they are all having – bet they talk for hours and eternity. What greater gift do we receive than the gift of reunification with our Heavenly Father and loved ones past.
Roy, thank you for your kindness and wonderful example, you will forever on this earth be dearly missed – love to you and to your family as they grieve a great loss cause it’s never easy to say goodbye to their dad, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and dear dear friend….. Rest In Peace sweet sweet Roy and tell my folks I love and Miss them, but as we all know – we will see eachother later…. bye
