Grant McNeill

Posted By tatemortuary on April 20, 2009

mcneillgrant1Grant Thorn McNeill died of Parkinson’s disease on April 20, 2009 in Grantsville, Utah, surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.   Grant was born September 23, 1932 in Spring Canyon, Carbon County, Utah to Golden Herbert McNeill and Myrtle Thorn as the second of eight children: Ted (Jackie), Patricia (John) Minardi, Boyd Newton (Julia), Barbara Kenny (deceased), Joan Campbell, Glen (deceased) (Evelyn), and Linda (Burnell) Sherwood. Grant was raised in Fruitland, where he met his childhood sweetheart, Karol Lea Roberts, whom he married after serving honorably for four years in the U.S. Navy.
Grant completed 33 years of service for the U.S. Government as a rubber expert at Tooele Army Depot, Ober-Ramstadt Germany, Hill Air Force Base, and two tours of duty as a civilian in Vietnam.  After retirement in 1987, Grant served Tooele County as a general contractor and handy-man. Throughout his life, he also enjoyed serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Grant’s greatest accomplishment and joy was his family. Grant and Karol were married in Evanston, Wyoming on September 3, 1956 and later sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on January 27, 1984. They moved to Erda in 1964 and raised six children: Bunnie (Bernd) Hadzik, DeAnn (Jeff) Holste, DiAnn (Richard) Bledsoe, Jeff (Teresa), Charlee (Melanie), Tracey (Shawn) Lloyd.  The family also lived in Germany for seven years, where they traveled Europe with plenty of laughter and love.   As a self-educated man, Grant could fix or build anything. He rarely traveled anywhere without his trademark cowboy hat, overalls, flashlight, and a string of his children or grandchildren at his heels. Grant saw every task as a teaching moment and never failed to show his love for those around him with his wit and humor.  He was always honest and the first to forgive, and opened his home to anyone in need.   As the grandfather to 26 children and great-grandfather to 20, Grant will be cherished as a kind, gentle man. His love and devotion to Karol and his family will continue in the next life. He will be missed by all that knew him, but his love and the lessons he taught will remain forever—including all of the practical jokes.   Thank you for letting us share our lives with you. We love you.    A viewing was held at Tate Mortuary (110 S. Main St., Tooele) on Wednesday, April 22.   Funeral services were held Thursday, April 23. Grant will be buried at the Grantsville City Cemetery.
